I'm Demitri, and today we're diving into the Lamtto RC11 head unit , a head unit that promises high functionality in a small package. Thanks to Lamtto, who provided this demo unit, I've had the opportunity to thoroughly test it in various scenarios, and I'm here to share my findings.

Design and Build Quality

The Lamtto RC11 is a compact device featuring a 6.25-inch screen, which is relatively small yet surprisingly effective. It comes equipped with two cameras: a front-facing 4K camera and a rear-facing 1080p camera, ensuring high-quality video capture from both angles.

One of the standout features of this unit is its mounting system. Unlike other head units that offer standard mounting options, the RC11 includes a unique magnetic bracket. This plastic, loophole-style bracket allows for easy attachment and removal of the unit from the dashboard. This design not only secures the unit effectively—even with a simple double-sided tape from Bunnings during my test installation—but also facilitates quick detachment to prevent theft, especially in unsafe areas.

Functionality and Performance

The RC11 excels in its core functionalities. It supports both wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it a versatile choice for users regardless of their smartphone allegiance. Pairing the device with a phone is straightforward: enable Bluetooth, find the device, and pair. Once connected, I found the interface responsive and intuitive, though the smaller screen size might feel limiting compared to larger units like the 9.3-inch ones.

Despite its compact size, the portability of the RC11 is a significant advantage. It allows for easy removal and reattachment, which is not only convenient but also enhances the security aspect, as the unit can be removed when not in use to avoid attracting undue attention.

Additional Features

Lamtto didn't skimp on extra features. The RC11 includes a 24-hour car monitoring mode, which can be activated by hardwiring the unit to the car's battery. This feature is ideal for those who want continuous monitoring, though it does somewhat contradict the unit's portability advantage.

Moreover, the RC11 is equipped with a G-sensor. This sensor activates recording if it detects sudden movement or impact, which is an essential feature for capturing incidents while parked.

Design and Installation

The Lamtto RC11 stands out with its compact design, featuring a 6.25-inch display that manages to be small yet effective. The unit boasts a dual-camera system with a front-facing 4K camera and a rear 1080p camera, promising high-quality video capture from both vantage points.

What really sets the RC11 apart is its innovative magnetic mounting system. This system simplifies the installation process, allowing for easy attachment and removal from the dashboard. It’s particularly useful for preventing theft, as the unit can be detached and stored away when not in use.

Connectivity and Features

The RC11 is versatile when it comes to connectivity. It supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it accessible regardless of your smartphone preferences. The connection process is straightforward and once paired, the unit offers a responsive and intuitive interface.

This head unit isn’t just about smart device connectivity; it’s also equipped with built-in speakers and an FM radio capability. You can tune it to any FM station and use it just like a traditional radio, which I found to be a reliable feature although I did not test it extensively.

Voice Control and Audio Options

Adding to its modern functionality, the RC11 supports voice controls, enhancing its usability while driving. It connects to your car’s stereo system using a standard 3.5mm jack, allowing you to play music directly through your vehicle’s speakers.

Portability and Utility

Despite its small size, the RC11 does not compromise on portability. This feature is a significant advantage for those who value security and convenience. I tested this unit not only in my Subaru Outback but also in my wife’s MG ZS EV. The ease of moving the unit between vehicles and the quick setup process were impressive.

Camera Quality and Adjustment

While I did not install the rear-view camera for extensive testing, the potential of a 1080p camera is promising. The front-facing 4K camera delivers excellent video quality. However, you might need to adjust the camera's angle to optimize the road view, avoiding too much of the car's bonnet in the frame.

Design Quirks

A few design choices seemed unusual, though not dealbreakers. The placement of the power button at the bottom and the USB-C port at the top for the power cable might seem counterintuitive. These elements require slight adjustments in how the cables are routed and may affect the unit's overall aesthetic.

Pricing and Value

The Lamtto RC11 is very competitive and offers excellent value considering its features and functionality. It stands out in its price class by offering a high-quality, versatile solution that rivals more expensive products.

Conclusion

Overall, the Lamtto RC11 has left a strong impression on me. Its combination of portability, robust feature set, and competitive pricing makes it a standout choice. Whether you’re looking for a high-quality camera system, seamless smartphone integration, or reliable FM connectivity, the RC11 covers all bases efficiently.
